Soft Hair: 6 Myths and Tips
Boho stylist Tori del Campo hears one question repeated during her days creating hair art:
How can I keep my hair feeling soft and looking great?
Here’s Tori’s list of candid answers.
MYTH
Mayonnaise works as a good at-home hair treatment mask.
According to Tori, it’s fairly useless. The science-based reason? Mayo’s fat-based molecules are too large to saturate into the hair shaft. Even after hours of treatment, mayo will create a mess rather than a miracle
TIP
Say no to mayo and choose organic coconut oil instead — its unsaturated fat molecules deliver nutrients deep into your hair cuticles.
MYTH
Daily washing keeps my hair clean and my style fresh.
Tori recommends training your hair to go longer between washes. This technique preserves natural oils and offers your hair extra protection.
TIP
Don’t wash your hair every day. Your hair can be trained to go longer without a wash regardless of its texture. Start by shampooing only every other day, and use dry shampoo on the off days. Eventually, when your hair routine feels normalized again, wash every 3 days and use dry shampoo on the off days.
MYTH
My hair is frizzy because I blow-dry it too much.
While that may be true (and you already know if you’re overdoing it with heat styling), Tori says that sometimes people don’t dry their hair completely. A halfway blowout leads to inevitable frizz!
TIP
Keep on drying! If you blow dry your hair and find the roots ragged with frizz, it’s probably not dry! Be sure to dry until the hair is totally smoothed. A quality hair oil, like the Aquage line’s Silkening Oil, can further your sleek style.
